Self-assessment (eng. self - esteem) - «the value that the individual gives himself in General and certain aspects of their personality, activity and behavior». Self-esteem acts as negatively sustainable structural formation, a component of self - concept, self-consciousness, and as the process of self-evaluation. The basis of self-assessment is a system of personal senses of the individual and its system of values. Self-esteem executes the regulatory and protective functions, influencing behaviours, activities and development of personality, its relationship with other people. Reflecting the degree of satisfaction or dissatisfaction, low self-esteem, self-assessment provides the basis for perception of its own success and failure, setting goals a certain level, i.e. the level of the claims of the individual. The protective function of the self-assessment allows for relative stability and independence) of the person, can lead to data corruption experience and therefore have a negative impact on development.

Self-evaluation of the developed individual, notes И.Я. Зимняя1, form a complex system for defining the nature of the self of the individual, and includes a General self-esteem, which reflects the level of self-esteem, holistic acceptance or rejection of himself, and partial, private self-assessment regarding attitudes to individual sides of his personality, actions, the progress of individual types of activities.

Self-esteem can be of different level of awareness and generality.

Self-esteem is characterized by the following parameters:

)Level (value) - high, average and low self-esteem;

2)Realism - adequate and inadequate (high and low) self-assessment;

)Peculiarities of structure - conflict and conflict-self-esteem;

)Temporary отнесенности - forward current, retrospective self-esteem;

For the development of personality effective is the nature of the self, when a sufficiently high overall self-esteem is combined with adequate differentiated partial self-esteem of different levels. Stable yet flexible enough self-assessment (which can change under the influence of new information, experience, the marks of others, change of criteria etc) is optimal for both development and for productive activities. Negative influence of excessive stable, rigid self-esteem, but also strongly fluctuating, changeable.

Conflicts of self-esteem can be as productive and дезорганизующий character. Instability and conflicts of self-esteem increases in critical periods of development, particularly in adolescence.

Thus, self-image is formed on the basis of the marks of others, evaluation of the results of their own activities and on the basis of the ratio of the real and the ideal ideas about themselves. Save formed, the usual self-esteem becomes man's need.
